The IRS offers free tax filing assistance to low-income individuals, those making $50,000 a year or less.  The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) provides trained volunteers who sit down with you and prepare your federal and state tax returns.  Most locations will also file these returns electronicially at no cost.

What is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)?
The ITIN is a nine-digit number starting with 9 that is used by individuals who do not have a Social Security Number to tile an income tax return. It is an identification number for income tax purposes, and for those purposes only.
